Philippines COVID 19 updates: The worst is done or not

Philippines COVID-19 cases increased over the past few days although the global public health emergency has ended.

In light of the “swift breakthrough” in virology and vaccination, the World Health Organization determined COVID-19 to no longer be a global public health emergency on Saturday, May 6, 2023. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanam Ghebreyesus declared COVID-19 as a global health emergency at the news conference in Geneva. Additionally, this has allowed most countries to return to life as they knew before the pandemic which has been on a downward trend for more than a year. This has allowed most countries to return to the life they knew before. 

Meanwhile, although the COVID-19 global health emergency has ended, Philippines' cases in some cities of the country are increasing this day and because of this, some mayors are reinstating mask-wearing requirements for indoor and outdoor activities in their areas. Such as Baguio City Mayor Magalon and Manila City Mayor Lacuna Phangan have now issued an executive order to make it mandatory to wear face masks again as the number of infected people increases. 

The Philippines has now 16, 053 confirmed active cases of the novel coronavirus as of last Monday, with 66, 466 deaths and 1, 637 additional cases bringing the total number of cases to 4, 129, 265. Even though the cases are rising in the country, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos said on Monday that the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is still “over”, additionally the Philippines can now concentrate on growing its economy, this is based afterward the declaration made by WHO. And with this great outcome, President Marcos also pointed out the idea that Filipinos can now focus on the development of their economy and the betterment of their lives, guided by the lessons of the pandemic, in his speech at the Asian Development Bank.
