DOJ will investigate torture allegations of Degamo suspect
by Adrian T. Organo
The Department of Justice said they will investigate the allegations about law enforcement officers tortured incident to a suspect in Negros Oriental Governor Roel Degamo's murder, last Thursday.
Four suspects who previously testified about their suspected participation in the March 4 murder of Degamo and nine others recently changed their stories. One of them, Osmundo Rivero, claimed that he was tortured while in police custody in an attempt to incriminate suspended politician Arnolfo Teves Jr. in the crime. He also claimed that the cops threatened to harm his family if he did not cooperate.
"If what he claims is true, that he was tortured or intimidated, and if that needs to be investigated, then we will conduct the investigation," said Senior Deputy State Prosecutor Richard Anthony Fadullon. "If it is proven that there is some truth or basis for the charges, then those who are responsible or who will be identified as responsible should face charges as well," he continued. The DOJ, on the other hand, has issued a warning to the accused.
Fadullon argued that Rivero should be held accountable for his actions if the accusations and charges were found to be without validity.
"He shouldn't be allowed to manipulate the criminal justice system or this justice system by changing his comments without first being able to adequately defend or explain them," he added, adding that the same would apply to the others. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin "Boying" Remulla expected retractions before some of the accused reportedly took in lawyers and discontinued cooperating.
