At least 33 civilians were killed after an attack by a suspected Islamic extremist in a province of Burkina Faso on May 11, 2023.
The attack on a town allegedly caused by Islamic extremists was described as "cowardly and barbaric" by the governor of a western Burkina Faso state. The attack killed at least 33 civilians, particularly farmers.
Local reports said heavily armed bandits on motorcycles had fired indiscriminately on the farmers. On Friday, the victims were buried but then again another attack was reported residents in Cheriba reported three additional persons were shot in the attack and that the alleged attackers had destroyed property before firing. Governor Babo Pierre Bassinga said in a statement that "The village of Youlou in the department of Cheriba, Mouhoun province, suffered a cowardly and barbaric terrorist attack." and mostly according to him peaceful civilians from their region are the common target of unknown gunmen in this attack incident the provisional death toll increased its number to 33 people. Additionally, the governor also stated that security in the area was being improved and asked them to redouble their vigilance and continue collaborating with the fighting forces for a victory against terrorism and the definitive return of peace and stability.
