A magnitude 4.8 earthquake hits the town of Romblon

  Magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit Romblon province last Saturday, May 20, at 8:40 am in the morning causing damage across the province.

  The epicenter of the tremor occurred 14 kilometers west of Odiongan town on Tablas Island, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Philvolcs), and according to Romblon News Network via its Facebook updates the severe earthquake damaged various parts of the Romblon State University College of Engineering and Technology building. Cracks were also discovered at the Bariri Bridge in Brgy. Hinag-oman, Ferol, Romblon. The Department of Public Works and Highways and Municipal Risk Reduction and Management Office assessed the buildings and structures right after the earthquake. Classes and work in the public and private sectors were immediately suspended that day due to several aftershocks,  Odiongan Mayor Trina Firmalo-Fabric said. The earthquake was felt at intensity 5, which is rated as strong in Odiongan, and instrumental intensity 1 was recorded in Ibajay and Malinao in Aklan and intensity 2 in Malay in Aklan and Pundan in Antique. Aftershocks with magnitudes ranging from 2.6 to 3.9 were reported in Romblon until beyond noon yesterday.
