In an interview with French newspaper Les Echos and Politico Europe published last Sunday, April 9. The interviewer asked, “The question we need to answer, as Europeans, is the following: is it in our interest to accelerate (a crisis) in Taiwan?”.

President Macron then answered “no” and said,

“The worst thing would be to think that we Europeans must become followers on this topic and take our cue from the U.S agenda and a Chinese overreaction”.

He added, saying Europe “should not be caught up in a disordering of the world and crises that aren’t ours”.

These remarks garnered attention from the public as well as created a debate and divided public opinion. Experts raised questions about President Macron’s view on whether it’s in line with the European Union’s position. In response, President Macron’s Elysee Palace Office said that the President's comments have been dense and frank and that President Macron was only concerned about the growing tensions in the region that could lead to a terrible accident.
