Upon the International Criminal Court decision on the held pre-trial chamber last January 26, 2023 authorizing Prosecutor Karim Khan to resume his investigation about the brutal war on drugs campaign that happened in the Philippines under the former administration Duterte. Philippines government requested a suspension to resume the investigation but Prosecutor Khan reject their request, since according to him “The Philippines has failed to show any error in the decision, let alone identified any error which materially affects the decision” on his submission last April 4, 2023 and added “Instead, the chamber reasonably and correctly considered the materials submitted by the Philippines and correctly applied the law” so then the investigation must resumes but Philippines government pin point that ICC has no jurisdiction in our country a ground they stand for the request of investigation suspension.
The said investigation was trying to look up for the alleged crime committed against humanity and the angle if the government really violated the human rights of Filipino victims. As of last April 30, 2022 according to the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency the death toll in the former President Duterte administration’s war on drug reaches 6,248 and police officers average of the arrested suspects for the illegal drugs was maximum of 14, 616 among of the suspects were foreign nationals, uniformed personnel, government employees, target listed, drug group leaders including members, armed group members, drug den maintenance, wanted listed, celebrity, license holders and others.
On the other hand, families of the victims urge the Philippines government to work with the International Criminal Court investigation instead of suspending it.
