ICC versus Philippines Government

Philippines government bid suspension to the International Criminal Court reopen investigation for the country's war on drugs case.

Recently the International Criminal Court decided to resume its investigation for the allegedly committed crimes against humanity during the conducted Philippines war on drugs operation of the former administration. In response, the government requested an investigation suspension as they said the International Criminal Court has no jurisdiction over the country's affairs and noted that the country's justice system is doing its job to fix the system like improving the law enforcement agencies. Additionally, according to Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla ICC should not impose on the Philippines for which it is no longer a signatory to the international tribunal.

In this heated discourse, we Filipinos are divided in opinion. But somehow, we cannot deny the feeling of disappointment and disagreement in regards to how the government handles the situation and the consciousness that we cannot stop to think and question the recent government response to ICC investigation. The resumption of International Criminal Court investigation stands for a valid ground actually, as judges concluded that Philippines failed to substantiate its assertions that the investigation and prosecution of killing during the former Duterte administration was enough and well performed. The International Criminal Court brings hope to the families of many drug war victims that up until now they are still seeking justice for a long time and based on this situation it is obviously significant to finish its investigation.

To be added, according to ICC prior to the withdrawal of the Philippines from the Rome Statute on March 17, 2018 and has been effective on March 17, 2019 the court still retains its jurisdiction to the country, in respect to alleged crimes that occurred on the territory of the Philippines while it was a state party from November 1, 2011 up to including March, 2019.

The presented reason of government to impose suspension is not strong and very malicious, as the investigation is for authorize cause interference to the International Criminal Court investigation is groundless. Remember that the main reason for all of this, stand to the concept that no one deserves to be treated injustice nor deprive their life and rights. We should render unto the victims of anti-illegal drugs the justice they deserve, so clarity of the case must be uncovered and punishment is a consequence of unlawful act.
